5 Data Visualization Mistakes That Hide the Story
By Jahangir Alam, Founder & Lead Data Analyst

Good visualization is not decoration — it is compression. A great chart lets a manager absorb in five seconds what a table would take five minutes to explain. These five mistakes do the opposite.
First: the wrong chart for the question. Pie charts with twelve slices, line charts for unrelated categories, 3D bars that distort scale. Match the chart to the comparison you actually want the viewer to make.
Second: truncated or misleading axes. A bar chart that starts at 90 instead of 0 makes a 5% difference look like a 50% gap. It might win the meeting, but it loses trust the moment someone checks the numbers.
Third: rainbow color palettes. Color should mean something — one accent for the series that matters, muted tones for context. When everything is bright, nothing stands out.
Fourth: dashboard clutter. Twelve visuals on one screen is a data dump, not a dashboard. Group by decision: one screen for “are we on track?”, another for “why not?”.
Fifth: no context. A number without a target, a trend, or a comparison is trivia. Every KPI card should answer “compared to what?” — last month, target, or forecast.
